The Torch Relay for the 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin is underway. CGTN's Dai Kaiyi spoke to the torch designer, who is an Industrial Design lecturer at the University of Science and Technology Beijing. They discussed the inspiration behind the design, and how it represents China's culture and national identity.
DAI KAIYI, CGTN: "Can you share with us the message the torch tries to convey and what was the thought process behind the design?"
ZHANG JUNHAI, Torch Designer of 9th Asian Winter Games: "When I first started designing the torch, I knew this was a major international event for our country. My goal was to blend national identity, regional characteristics, and the spirit of ice and snow into one design. The first thing that came to mind was 'China Red,' so at the core of the torch, I created a heart-shaped element symbolising the heart of China. I also incorporated Harbin's city flower, the lilac, by using a gradient that transitions from Lilac Purple to China Red. To highlight the theme of winter sports, I added an outer shell that combines white snow with transparent ice-crystal textures. The final design features a dual-layer structure. I wanted to showcase China's unique identity, highlight Harbin as the host city, and reflect our rich cultural heritage and national pride."
DAI KAIYI ,CGTN: "What's your personal expectation of the upcoming Asian Winter Games?"
ZHANG JUNHAI, Torch Designer of the 9th Asian Winter Games "Winter sports have always been an exciting and highly anticipated part of international competitions. China has hosted many major events over the years, and we have a strong foundation in winter sports. I hope that as we continue to host events like this, China's presence and influence in the world of winter sports will only grow stronger and more dynamic."
