Saudi Arabia's first-ever Winter Olympian Fayik Abdi set for Asian Winter Games debut
Date:2025-02-09

Fayik Abdi, the first Winter Olympian from Saudi Arabia, will make his debut at the Asian Winter Games in Harbin, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, on Sunday. In the latest episode of CGTN Sports Scene's Talk Sports exclusive interview series, the Alpine skier chatted with Zhu Mandan about his role in promoting the development of snow and ice sports in his country.

Abdi participated in the Men's Alpine Skiing Giant Slalom event at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, making Saudi Arabia's debut at the cold weather version of the world's biggest multi-sports showcase. The 27-year-old describes skiing as "magic" because he feels there is no way to replicate the feeling it gives him.

Saudi Arabia has been investing in developing winter sports at an increasing scale in recent years, and will host the next Asian Winter Games in Trojena in 2029. As a contributor to his country's successful bid for the competition, Abdi says he believes Saudi Arabia can learn a lot from China in promoting winter sports.
