2025 Asian Winter Games: Indonesian journalists experience frozen adventure in Harbin
Date:2025-02-09

The Asian Winter Games isn't just welcoming athletes to Harbin. Media professionals from across Asia are also attending. What happens when journalists from tropical Indonesia meet the snowy landscapes of Harbin? Our reporter Gou Tianqi has the story.

"I feel like crazy you know."

GOU TIANQI, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province: "Hello, we're now on the Songhua River in Harbin. Today we have two special guests from a country with no ice and snow."

"Hi, I'm Linda Wahyudi, a broadcaster from Indonesia."

"Hi, I'm Claudia, also from Indonesia."

"Today it's all going to be about ice and snow, are you guys ready?"

"Yes!"

"Alright! Let's go!"

To cover the Asian Winter Games, they've traveled from Indonesia, with temperatures above 30°Celsius to Harbin, where it's 20 below zero.

There's a saying in China: "Since you're here, make the most of it." So, I decided to take them on an extreme winter adventure.

Starting with winter swimming, a traditional winter activity along the banks of the Songhua River. This enthusiast, aged 80, says he has been winter swimming for 20 years.

To dip our toes into this chilly experience, I asked for a basin of water from the pool.

"Ready?"

To dip our fingers.

"We can see that it's already starting to freeze, the water."

Then, we experienced the joy of harvest, winter edition. Ice fishing, a traditional method of fishing in northern China.

"I feel like crazy, because it's so cold."

During our unique picnic on the Songhua River, I asked a question that I've always been curious about.

GOU TIANQI, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province: "Indonesia is a tropical country. It does not have ice and snow. So how do you guys develop winter sports?"

LINDA WAHYUDI, Director, iMSPORT Indonesia: "Now we have ice rinks in Indonesia, 18 ice rinks, especially in malls. So, kids you know, starting from kids, they can play and start skating. It's not easy you know."

But they believe the Asian Winter Games will play an important role.

CLAUDIA NAULI, Marketing Manager, iMSPORT Indonesia: "Now we have actual athletes competing here, I think it will inspire more and more (people)."

Besides promoting winter sports, they also shared their thoughts on how the Games facilitated inter-cultural communication.

"I haven't heard about Harbin before. I only knew Shanghai, Beijing. I thought when I was going to Harbin, it's not a famous city, it's probably going to be nothing. And then there's (pointing to the skyscrapers behind). It's very surprising. We are happy to be here."

And this might just be one of the biggest charms of sports: bringing different people together. Gou Tianqi, CGTN, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province.
